"Kids In The Dark" is a song performed by Bat For Lashes. It serves as the first track on Bat For Lashes' fifth album, Lost Girls. It is the lead single from the album released on June 10, 2019.
The song was originally written for the Stephen King TV series Castle Rock, but Natasha and the song’s co-writer/co-producer, Charles Scott IV, got along so well they decided to keep meeting and made a full album together.
The song was teased with a series of short clips on Bat for Lashes' social media a week prior to the song’s release.
On September 5, 2019, Natasha shared an artwork for the track.
Music and composition
In an interview with Rough Trade, Natasha said that writing “Kids in the Dark” made her realise that “living in LA, driving around in these peachy sunsets, falling in love, being in the car at night, winding the windows down, all the hot air and the neon, the mountains – all this stuff was permeating my consciousness, and making the most romantic impression.”
The song’s lyrics tell a fragment of the story about Nikki Pink – the protagonist of Khan’s girl-gang movie – falling in love.
“The lyrics describe the nights they’re having together, where they’re just leaving the world behind and becoming little kids again. It’s a song about nestling and unfurling into something safe with somebody – even though these [vampires] are probably going to be coming soon to get her.”
The Rolling Stone opined:
“The ambient, synth-laced track is a love song recalling times of youth as Khan croons, “Let’s take it down/To where the loving starts/Where we’re just kids in the dark.”
“The delicious first single “Kids in the Dark” sets the scene, with its opulent haze of 80’s synths and stuttering disco beats, but nothing in this topsy-turvy world is quite as it seems.”
