Music and composition
Natasha Khan, during her September 23, 2019 interview with FADER:
“It’s an obvious reference to the [LA] landscape, but also about being in a relationship with someone who doesn’t feel a sense of home — that romance about the nomadic wild guy and how difficult it is to penetrate people that don’t want to be. It was one of the earlier songs where I was using the landscape as a metaphor for these stark people, empty promises, and vast distances. In love, it’s not the real thing.”
“Bat For Lashes has shared her powerful, striking new song 'Desert Man' - tune in now. New song 'Desert Man' is a wonderful return, opening in sparse, sombre shades before surging to a lush finale. Symphonic in its use to synthesised sound, Bat For Lashes allows her voice to locate its own space amid the arrangement, crooning: "Love is a nowhere land...".”
The Stereogum opined:
““Desert Man” is arid and dreamy, Khan’s voice lifting in the chorus to sing: “Take it slow, desert man/ Love is a nowhere land/ Love is a desert land.”.”
